2nd Methodist Church - Iquique

from John Elmore, missionary in Iquique

Living in Iquique Chile, is pretty much like living anywhere else in the world. There are Shopping malls, theaters, Restaurants, Schools, vehicles of every size and shape, new and old. In the morning, along the beachfront there are people out exercising, walking and running along the beach, there is the morning traffic heading into the downtown area for work.
Morning time for me and my wife are pretty similar to that of any working couple. We wake up; I turn on the hot water heater, start the coffee pot and prepare breakfast. My wife is in the shower, and getting ready for school. We have breakfast and then join the traffic to drop her off at school. I join the joggers along the beach before I go to my duties. While I am on my power walk, I notice a lot of things that I don’t see while driving. People sleeping on the beach and just waking up with the sun in their face. People sleeping under the stairs that lead to the beach, they have cardboard boxes for walls that protect them from the night air.

In a neighborhood called Caupolican, is where the 2nd Church of Iquique is. This neighborhood is only about four miles from where I live. Their reality is completely different from mine. Two houses share one wall, the house are literally joined, one house to the other. Unemployment is high; many of the houses do not have running water or electricity. In an area about the size of one normal size house, there are four families living. In this neighborhood, three weeks ago there was a fire that destroyed four houses and killed a mother and three children. This tragedy affected the whole community. The fire was started by a candle that was left burning. They did not have electricity or plumbing. The children had attended the2nd Methodist Church of Iquique. Services where held at the Church.

It is at this site where I will be constructing a new Church. The facility is too small for the growing membership. People stand in the streets to attend the service. Construction has begun by the Church. They are putting in the foundation. The First team arrives from First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa , Alabama on June 23rd. Headed by Don and Nancy Hartley.

The second team will be coming from Mt Pisgah United Methodist Church in Midlothian Virginia: its team leader. Sue Ann Lewis. There will also be a team coming the end of July from Texas lead by Paul Sackett. In November another team is scheduled led by Dan and Joyce Frankfother.

Four teams is not enough to build this Church. I am asking you to pray about this in your Church. I am asking you to consider bringing a Volunteer in Mission group from your church, to help construct this new Church
